When planning our NYC trip, one thing that was non negotiable was the Broadway plays! We went to both Hamilton and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and they were both experiences I will never forget!
HOW WAS HAMILTON?
Hamilton was AMAZING!! Our hotel was right next to Richard Rodgers Theatre which is where Hamilton is being shown, so we didn’t have to walk very far to get there! They were very accommodating by allowing me to get in early ahead of everyone else to get souvenirs without a crowd in my way and get to my seat! LET’S TALK ABOUT THE SEATS! THEY WERE AMAZING! Hamilton had an ELEVATED PLATFORM for the handicap section, and it was very close to the stage, see attached picture. This meant that no matter how tall the person in front of me could’ve been I was going to be able to see! For the first time ever to any event I have been to, I was guaranteed to be able to see the actors faces and be able to see exactly what they were saying or feeling without someone being in my way or having a giant pole right in the middle of my vision! Whether it’s a play, a concert, or a basketball or football game, you should consider building a platform for the handicapped sections, because we want to see the event just as much as you do. If not a platform, maybe take out the seat in front of the wheelchair person, so they have a better chance at seeing. Or give us front row access! Hamilton gets an A+ from the CMA Team!
HOW WAS HARRY POTTER?
While I enjoyed Hamilton's musical more than the HP play, the Cursed Child was funny and entertaining. It is shown in the Lyric Theatre and accessibility wise, it was adequate. They also had it so that I could see, while not by an elevated platform (they should take notes from Hamilton) but by the slope of the seats. The handicap seats were also close to the stage, another plus for them. And while they let me in early to get my souvenirs, getting to my seat was not so easy. We had to notify them once we were done shopping so they could escort us outside and then proceed to walk a short distance to a different entrance.
From our experience, we feel any wheelchair user can have a positive experience at a Broadway Theatre. They try to be accommodating to your needs. We would advise you to get your ticket ASAP to make sure it's available. I would love to go back and see Wicked!
