Statue of Liberty

We had been to the Statue of Liberty once before, but it was years ago and we were very rushed and couldn’t spend nearly enough time there, so I was very excited to go again. As we’ve discussed, Uber was once again the easiest way to get to Battery Park where we got onto the ferry. The ferry experience was one that I can’t remember ever having before. Instead of being put in a different queue for wheelchairs I was in the normal queue with the masses. However, once spotting me, they immediately stopped traffic and got a ramp out for me to use. See attached photo. Also, if this your first time in NYC and you want to do the Statue of Liberty, you need to watch for high/low tide. We didn’t even know this was a thing when we went years ago so I guess we were just extremely lucky because we never had a problem with it. When looking things up for this trip however, we found a video of a wheelchair user having a very difficult time with the ramp due to the tide! As expected, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island were very accessible and we were able to spend as much time as we wanted there! If you’re a history nerd like me, you’ll find it all very fascinating. On the journey back, I was able to go to a designated area and skip the line to board the ferry. On the ferry, there is a designated area near the front for wheelchair users to sit. Overall the accessibility was great and any wheelchair user should be able to go to the Statue of Liberty without a problem. Just make sure you check the tide before you go!!
